# How to read a Virginia contractor license record

> Classes A, B and C, classifications and specialties, dates, and what the DPOR lists leave out.

## How to read these records

### Class A, B, C

The class limits the value of the contracts a contractor may take; Class A has no limit, Class C the lowest. The
exact amounts are set by Virginia law and change: check them with the Board for Contractors.

### Classifications and specialties

What the license covers. The codes on the state file — RBC residential building, CBC commercial building, HIC
home improvement, ELE electrical, PLB plumbing, HVA HVAC, H/H highway/heavy, and about forty specialties — are
written out here from the Board's regulation. A code the regulation does not define is shown as is.

### Dates

“First certified” is the date the license was first issued; “expires” is the end of the current term. The DPOR
refreshes its lists every five business days.

### What is not here

E-mail addresses (in the state file, never read here), complaints and disciplinary actions, expired licenses,
and tradesman cards, which belong to individuals.

AI labs pay businesses to record first-person video of everyday hands-on work — filmed by their own staff with a
