Virginia contractors — class A, B and C, with every specialty spelled out
Type a contractor name or a license number. 53,737 current licenses in the DPOR lists downloaded on October 2, 2026.
Hiring a contractor? A dated license report ($19) for your file — or your subcontractor list checked.
What this is
Virginia licenses contractors in three classes — A, B and C — and gives each license a set of classifications and specialties written as three-letter codes: RBC, CBC, HIC, ELE, PLB. The state publishes the lists as raw text files. This site makes them searchable, spells every code out from the Board's own definitions, and lists contractors by city, class and specialty.
Who uses it
- Homeowners — is this contractor licensed, in which class, and for this kind of work?
- General contractors — check a subcontractor's class and specialties before the job.
- Suppliers and insurers — the licensed contractors of one specialty in one city.
What it is not
Not the DPOR, and not a license. The class sets the size of the contracts a contractor may take: see the Board for Contractors for the limits. Complaints and disciplinary actions are on the DPOR's own License Lookup. Only current licenses are in these lists.
